review 1: An extraordinary passionate and moving book. Aslam writes of ordinary people who have the same hopes and fears as those of us in the West, but whose lives can be horribly torn apart and who can be forced to act in ways over which they have no control because they live in failed or failing societies where even the local police are part of the problem. What makes this book all the more powerful, is that he writes in such lyrical prose. He is an extraordinary writer.
review 2: This is one of those books where I felt totally absorbed into the setting so that the book didn't quite leave me even when I wasn't reading it. Well-written and lyrical, it gives insight into the experience of living through the U.S. war in Afghanistan in particular and a world of betrayal a
... morend suspicion of betrayal in general. The reason I deducted one star is that the last pages read like a screenplay, a characteristic I occasionally detect in modern novels, but something that I can forgive considering the hefty bucks that are made with a book that's transferred to the big screen. less

What stood out was the language. Beautiful. Poetic.
