review 1: I don't know... maybe I'm suffering from Spook fatigue from reading 7 of these books in a row. But, it took some effort to finish this, and I felt like a lot of it was just repetition.Same old Spook, with his frustrating black/white views. Same Tom, stumbling too quickly into trouble and getting miraculously saved at the last moment. Same poor Alice, who never gets acceptance even though she seems to save everyone's ass at least once per book. I think I'm going to take a break before continuing on to the next book.
review 2: Following the previous book The Spook’s Nightmare has restored my faith in the series. At the beginning the story seems to be a return to the earlier books but once Bony Lizzie appears it becomes apparent that this book is laying the grou
... morendwork for some big things to come.I do have some issues though; I mentioned this in a previous review but Tom doesn’t seem to grow much. The other thing is why is it always Alice that does the cooking and cleaning? Tom refers to his appalling skills so I can let the cooking slide but when they all ended up at the derelict cottage it was Alice that started sweeping no mention of anyone helping out.Bony Lizzie was actually my favourite thing about this story. She creates a real danger not just in the physical sense, although her strutting around the castle was pretty cool. She’s cruel but intelligent and manipulates with ease. As Alice’s mother Tom can’t bring himself to hurt her and Lizzie doesn’t give him a second change. She is the best opponent The Spook and Tom have had.Let’s see what happens next… less

I've come to the conclusion that I really hate Tom Ward, not fond of Mr. Gregory and feel that Alice is too good for them all. After 7 books, Tom has learned NOTHING, IMO, of self-preservation and is just too stupid to live. I understand some of it is part of the plot, but GEEZ! The only reason I am still listening to this series is because my husband likes to finish what he starts and we listen during our daily commute.
